ASML is the world's only manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines — the tools that print the circuit patterns on leading-edge chips. Without EUV, it is physically impossible to manufacture chips at 7nm or below at commercial scale. Every advanced chip from TSMC, Samsung, and Intel Foundry depends on ASML's systems. The company holds a complete monopoly on EUV and controls roughly 85% of the broader DUV lithography market. Lead times run 12–18 months per machine, and each EUV system costs approximately $200 million. Export controls imposed by the US, Netherlands, and Japan have blocked ASML from shipping EUV — and since late 2023, the most advanced DUV — machines to China, making ASML a central node in the geopolitical semiconductor rivalry.
