Shin-Etsu Chemical is the world's largest supplier of silicon wafers, holding approximately 30% of the global market. Its 300mm polished and epitaxial wafers are the substrate on which every leading-edge chip is built — TSMC, Samsung, Intel Foundry, and virtually every major fab depends on Shin-Etsu's supply. The company also produces photoresist chemicals critical to EUV lithography. Silicon wafer supply is highly concentrated: the top five suppliers (all Japanese or Taiwanese) control over 90% of the market. Any disruption to Shin-Etsu's operations — natural disaster, geopolitical incident, or capacity shortage — would immediately halt advanced chip production globally.
