China produces roughly 60% of the world's refined germanium, a byproduct of zinc and coal smelting used in silicon-germanium (SiGe) transistors at advanced logic nodes, fiber-optic preforms, and infrared optics. Export licensing controls effective August 2023 give Beijing leverage over a material that is integral to TSMC's advanced-node process technology and Applied Materials' epitaxy CVD systems.
