The Spruce Pine mining district in North Carolina is the world's principal source of ultra-high-purity quartz — a silica so low in trace metals that it can be melted into the fused-silica optical blanks used in ASML's EUV and DUV lens systems, and into the quartz process tubes used in diffusion furnaces by Tokyo Electron and others. A single industrial disaster at Spruce Pine in 2008 caused temporary shortages across the global chip industry, illustrating the concentration risk.
